Boyne Reads 2016
The Boyne District Library is pleased to announce the selection for the One Book, One Community – Boyne Reads 2016– Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy by Karen Abbott. Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy tells the spellbinding true story of four women who risked everything—their homes, their families, and their very lives—during the Civil War.
The highlight of Boyne Reads 2016 will be a visit by Abbott to Boyne City on Oct.4. She will meet with Boyne City High School students at an assembly during the school day, and with the community at an evening presentation. Admission is FREE!
In addition, a special Author’s Dinner will be held at 5:30pm on October 4th in the Boyne City High School Cafeteria Commons. Tickets, which can be purchased at the BDL main circulation desk, are $15 per person. The menu, prepared by the BCHS Hospitality Class, will include: Field greens with a sweet onion vinaigrette, assorted breads, turkey slices with cranberry relish, carved roasted pork loin, roasted rosemary potatoes, and sweet tomato pudding, sweet tea & coffee.
Book Discussion sessions are scheduled for 7pm on the following evenings: Tuesday, August 29th (Part 1 – Liar), Thursday, September 8th (Part 2 – Temptress), Tuesday, September 19th (Part 3 – Soldier), and Thursday, September 29th (Part 4 – Spy). All discussions will be held in the Boyne District Library Community Room. Please plan to attend any or all of these sessions!
The Boyne Reads event is sponsored by the Boyne District Library, the Friends of the Library, and the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, in cooperation with Boyne City Public Schools. Funding is also provided by the Doll-Loesel Foundation.
“We are fortunate to have an author of Abbott’s caliber come to Boyne City for Boyne Reads,” said library director Cliff Carey. “We receive tremendous support for this event and we appreciate the efforts of the Friends of the Library and Boyne Reads committee members who make this possible.”
“At Boyne City public schools, we are very excited about our involvement in the Boyne Reads program again this year,” said school media specialist and Boyne Reads committee member Cindi Place. “The book ‘Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy provides opportunities for valuable lessons in a variety of subject areas, and having a successful author talk with the students is priceless.”
One Book, One Community – Boyne Reads began in 2005 with Jodi Picoult’s “My Sister’s Keeper.” In following years, authors Chris Bohjalian, Catherine Ryan Hyde, David Oliver Relin, and Robert Kurson have highlighted the event. The purpose of Boyne Reads is to encourage reading, create community and promote the exploration of ideas, culture and knowledge through books.
Other members of the committee are Kathy Anderson, Josette Lory, Susan Conklin, Ed Hara, Trish Wright, Mary Ann Whipp, and Chris Bandy, as well as library staff members Carey, Monica Kroondyk and Cindi Place.
The library has multiple copies of the book and ebook, and they are also available for purchase at Local Flavor, Boyne City’s locally owned book store.
“We encourage the whole community to get involved in Boyne Reads,” Carey said. “This is a fascinating story and a great opportunity to bring our community together.”
